HAMMOND – UT Arlington used big innings late in both games to earn a doubleheader sweep over Southeastern Louisiana in Southland Conference softball action Saturday afternoon at North Oak Park.
The Lady Lions fell to 19-33 overall and 7-22 in SLC play. UT Arlington clinched a Southland Conference Tournament, running its record to 23-21 overall and 17-12 in league action.
In the opener, UTA scored five in the fifth, three in the sixth and three in the seventh on the way to an 11-1 victory. The nightcap saw the Lady Mavs score four in the top of the seventh to secure a 6-1 win.
Southeastern will close out its 2009 season on Sunday at 12 p.m. Seniors
Heather Sherrill and
Allyson McCubbins will be honored prior to Sunday's contest in a special Senior Day ceremony.
Game One – UT Arlington 11, Southeastern Louisiana 1
Southeastern freshman
Katelyn Thomason (6-11) and UTA starter Cara Hulme (13-13) matched zeroes until the top of the fifth inning. Kelsey Kaiser drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jamiee Stinson and scored on an RBI single by Heather Fortenberry. Two Southeastern errors led to four more runs to give UTA a commanding 5-0 lead.
UTA added three more unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning. Stinson reached on an error and scored on a two-out single by Courtney Zink. Samantha Chumchal followed with a two-run shot off Southeastern sophomore
Bailey Zievert to give UTA an 8-0 lead.
The Lady Lions avoided the mercy rule by scratching out a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sophomore
Katie Duhe led off the inning with a triple to center and scored when Sherrill followed with an RBI single.
UTA pushed across three more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Kaiser singled home the frame's first run and Stinson then capped the Lady Maverick scoring with a two-run home run to put UTA up, 11-1. All 11 UTA runs came with two outs.

Game Two – UT Arlington 6, Southeastern Louisiana 1
UT Arlington took a 1-0 lead off Southeastern junior
Catherine Gunther (9-15) in the top of the second inning. Stinson singled home the game's first run to give UTA a 1-0 lead.
After retiring the first seven Lady Lions she faced, UTA starter Cassandra Nordie (3-2) ran into trouble in the bottom of the third inning. Singles by Freeman and Logan put runners at first and second with two outs. After Duhe drew a walk to load the bases, Sherrill hit a sharp single to right to score Freeman and knot the score at 1-1.
From there, Gunther got in a groove, striking out the side in the fourth inning, before pitching into a jam with one out in the top of the fifth inning. UTA ripped off three consecutive singles with Fortenberry's single ending the string and breaking the tie.
UTA put the game away in the top of the seventh inning. Nordie helped her own cause with a three-run home run. The Lady Mavs took advantage of a Southeastern error to plate the inning's fourth run and head into the bottom of the seventh with a 6-1 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Logan reached on a two-out error by Stinson. However, Nordie forced Duhe to ground out to complete the doubleheader sweep.
