Box Score
HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana allowed six unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning, allowing McNeese State to take a 10-2, six-inning victory in the rubber game of this weekend's Southland Conference series Sunday afternoon at North Oak Park.
The Lady Lions fell to 18-27 overall and 6-18 in league play. McNeese State improved to 23-25 overall and 15-9 in SLC action.
Freshman
Meghan Gomez and sophomore
Kelly Lyman each homered for the second straight day for Southeastern. However, the homers were the only two hits McNeese State starter Bethany Stefinsky (14-13) allowed in the complete-game victory.
McNeese State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off Southeastern freshman
Katelyn Thomason (6-8). Lindsey Langner led off the contest with a single, advanced to second on a Holly Long sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a wild pitch. Dani Price's fly out to left was then deep enough to plate Langner for the early advantage.
Southeastern would knot the score in the bottom of the second inning on a Gomez solo shot over the left centerfield fence. The Alvin, Texas native's team-high eighth home run of the season tied the score at 1.
The Cowgirls retook the lead for good in the top of the third inning. A two-run single by Molly Guidry plated the frame's first two runs and Whitney Corbello added an RBI single to put McNeese on top, 4-1.
Southeastern cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lyman ripped a one-out home run – her third of the season – to move the Lady Lions within two, 4-2.
Any hope of a Southeastern comeback was ended in the sixth inning. The Cowgirls loaded the bases versus Southeastern junior
Jenna Yoder with three consecutive one-out singles. Yoder forced Holly Long to hit a grounder to senior
Heather Sherrill at third, but senior catcher
Allyson McCubbins dropped Sherrill's throw home to allow Liz Morvant to score.
After Yoder got the second out with a successful Sherrill to McCubbins force at home, the Cowgirls took advantage of the extra out that resulted from McCubbins' miscue. Guidry ripped a two-run double, Heather Mosser followed with a two-run single and Tiffany Denham capped the scoring with an RBI single to put the Cowgirls ahead, 10-2.
Southeastern could not avoid the mercy rule, as Stefinsky sat down the Lady Lions in order in their half of the sixth.
The Lady Lions will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting non-conference foe South Alabama at 6 p.m. at North Oak Park.
