BATON ROUGE – Southeastern Louisiana left 17 runners on base and dropped a doubleheader to No. 18 LSU in non-conference softball action Wednesday evening at Tiger Park.

Southeastern fell to 17-25 overall with the losses. The nationally-ranked Tigers improved to 27-10-1 overall.

In the opener, Southeastern left eight base runners stranded in a 9-1 loss. Sophomore Kelly Lyman was 3-for-3, sophomore Katie Duhe was 2-for-3 and junior Kady King drove in a run in the loss for the Lady Lions.

In the nightcap, the Lady Lions left nine on base in an 8-1 defeat. LSU scored two runs each in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings to complete the sweep. Freshman Jordan Logan had two hits in the loss for Southeastern.

Southeastern will be back in action this weekend, hosting Southland Conference foe McNeese State for a three-game series at North Oak Park. The series opens with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday followed by Sunday's series finale at 12 p.m.

Game 1 – No. 18 LSU 9, Southeastern Louisiana 1 (6 Innings)
The first two LSU batters of the game reached off Southeastern junior starter Jenna Yoder (3-5), as consecutive infield singles by Kirsten Shortridge and Jazz Jackson put runners at the corners with no outs. However, Yoder bounced back to retire the next three batters to end the threat.

Southeastern mounted a threat of its own in the top of the second inning. Senior Allyson McCubbins drew a leadoff walk and a one-out single by Lyman put runners at first and second. Faile recovered, striking out sophomore Heather Grivas and forcing King to fly out to keep the Lady Lions off the board.

LSU took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Anissa Young reached on an error by King to lead off the inning. After Yoder retired the next two batters, consecutive singles by Jessica Mouse and Shortridge put the Lady Tigers up, 2-0, with a pair of unearned runs.

The Lady Lions threatened again in the top of the third inning. Duhe ripped her team-high 13th double of the season down the left field line with one out. But, Faile again pitched out of the jam, sitting down sophomore Tamra Ladnier and senior Heather Sherrill to maintain the LSU lead.

LSU added to their lead in the bottom of the third. Juliana Santos led off the inning with a single and then scored when Rachel Mitchell followed with a double off the left field wall. Ashley Applegate followed with a bloop single to shallow left to plate Mitchell. Young followed with a bloop single of her own to put runners at first and second with no outs.

Yoder then forced Faile to hit a shot right to Sherrill at third, setting up a double play. Yoder then walked Ashley Langoni to put runners at first and second with two outs. Mouse then pushed the LSU lead to 5-0 with a flare into shallow left.

In the fourth, McCubbins again drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a one-out single by Lyman. This time, however, King came through with an RBI single to center to plate Southeastern's first run and cut the lead to 5-1.

The Lady Lions squandered a chance to cut into the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Duhe started the scoring opportunity with a single. Ladnier then hit a shot to short and Applegate dropped the force attempt at second to put runners on first and second with no outs. Faile was again resourceful, retiring Sherrill, McCubbins and freshman Meghan Gomez to keep the lead at four.

Yoder walked Young and Mouse to give LSU a pair of base runners with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Shortridge's third hit of the game plated pinch runner Tiffany Shaw to give LSU a 6-1 advantage.

Lyman doubled for her third hit of the game to lead off the top of the Southeastern sixth. Faile left her standing on second, retiring the next three Lady Lion batters.

LSU enforced the mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Applegate followed by a two-run home run by Young.

Game 2 – No. 18 LSU 8, Southeastern Louisiana 1

LSU went right to work off Southeastern junior Catherine Gunther (8-11) in the bottom of the first inning. Shortridge led off the game with a double, followed by a single by Jackson to put runners at second and third with no outs. After a Santos groundout, Mitchell singled up the middle to give LSU a 2-0 lead.

Southeastern threatened versus LSU starter Brittany Mack (11-2) in the top of the second inning, as consecutive one-out singles by Duhe, Lyman and Gomez loaded the bases with one outs. Mack forced junior Amber Freeman and junior Chelsea Takacs into consecutive groundouts to keep Southeastern scoreless.

The Lady Lions loaded the bases again in the top of the third. Logan led off the inning with a single, which Mack followed with consecutive walks to Ladnier and Sherrill to pack the bags with no outs. After Mack retired the next two batters, she uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Ladnier to score and cut the LSU lead to 2-1.

Gunther sat down seven LSU batters in a row before the Tigers mounted a two-out rally in their half of the third. After Gunther hit Santos, Mitchell followed with a flare down the left field line that fell fair just out of the reach of a diving Duhe for a double. Applegate followed with an RBI single to extend the LSU lead to 4-1.

A walk issued to Morgan Russell and an infield single by Shortridge put runners at first and second with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Jackson then hit a single to left, which Takacs let skip past her, allowing two runs to score and LSU to take a 6-1 lead.

A leadoff walk to Ladnier and a one-out single by McCubbins put runners at the corners with one out in the top of the fifth inning. Mack was able to cool off the red-hot Duhe and Lyman to keep the deficit at 6-1.

LSU padded its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mitchell singled up the middle and scored on an RBI triple by Applegate. Applegate would come home on a sacrifice fly by Young to extend the Tiger lead to 8-1.

Southeastern freshman Katelyn Thomason pitched a perfect bottom of the sixth inning to avoid the mercy rule. Logan led off the top of the seventh with a single for the Lady Lions, but Mack set down the next three batters to secure the win.
