Southeastern jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Senior
Heather Sherrill continued her torrid stretch, extending her current hit streak to nine games with a two-out solo home run – her third of the season. A walk issued to senior
Allyson McCubbins followed by a single by freshman
Meghan Gomez gave the Lady Lions a chance to add to their early advantage, but Mikulin bounced back to strike out sophomore
Katie Duhe to end the inning.
The Bearkats knotted the score in the bottom of the first. Hailey Wiginton led off the inning with a double off Southeastern starter
Catherine Gunther (8-10) and later scored on a one-out sacrifice fly by Mikulin to knot the score.
SHSU took the lead for good in the bottom of the second inning. An RBI double by Sarah Parich and a run-scoring single by Alex Survant plated two runs and put the Bearkats up, 3-1.
Southeastern cut into the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Duhe and sophomore
Kelly Lyman reached on consecutive errors to open the frame. One out later, sophomore
Heather Grivas singled home Duhe, putting runners at the corners with one out. Mikulin again pitched out of the jam, however, retiring freshman
Jordan Logan and sophomore
Tamra Ladnier to end the inning with the Lady Lions down, 3-2.
Sam Houston State got the run back in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Amy Brown. The Bearkats broke the game open in the fifth, as RBI's by Callie Wood, Wiginton, Brown and Mikulin fueled a four-run frame that gave SHSU an 8-2 lead.
The Bearkats enforced the mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth inning. Amanda Lindsey singled home the first run and Lady Lion sophomore
Bailey Zievert hit Ashley Nelson with the bases loaded to force in the final run of the contest.
Southeastern will return to action on Wednesday, heading to Baton Rouge for a 4 p.m. doubleheader at LSU.
