LORMAN, Miss. – Southeastern Louisiana freshmen Meghan Gomez and Lauren Coniglio each hit clutch home runs, while freshman pitcher Katelyn Thomason was dominant in 4.2 innings of relief to lead the Lady Lions to a 6-5 win over Alcorn State in eight innings at the Alcorn Softball Field.

The Lady Lions improved to 5-2 with the victory, while Alcorn State fell to 2-6 overall.

Down 4-3 in the top of the sixth inning, Southeastern got a big boost from Coniglio. The LaPlace native powered a leadoff home run over the left centerfield fence to knot the score.

Senior Allyson McCubbins was placed on second to start the eighth inning. With one out, Gomez smoked her first collegiate home run over the centerfield wall to give Southeastern a 6-4 lead.

Thomason (2-0) allowed her first hit in the bottom of the eighth, allowing Michelle Lewis to score and pull the Lady Braves within one. Thomason, who finished with seven strikeouts, retired the next three batters she faced to preserve the win.

Southeastern jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Freshman Jordan Logan led off the game with a triple down the leftfield line and would later score on an error by ASU.

The Lady Lions padded the lead in the top of the third with a two-out rally. Sophomore Katie Duhe started the threat with a sharply hit single. Senior Allyson McCubbins followed with a towering home run over the left field fence to put Southeastern up, 3-0.

Alcorn State answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the third inning. Southeastern starter Catherine Gunther hit Christine Garcia to lead off the inning and Bianca Armstrong would clear the bases with a two-run home run over the left field fence to pull ASU within two at 3-2.

ASU would take the lead off Gunther in the fourth inning, as Hanako Kilburn led off the frame with a double to the left centerfield gap. One out later, Barbara White singled home Kilburn to knot the score at 3. Aneka Knowles, who pinch ran for White, took advantage of a Thomason wild pitch and a passed ball by sophomore Heather Grivas to give the Lady Braves the lead and set up Coniglio and Gomez's late-inning heroics.

Southeastern will be back in action on Saturday, facing Mississippi Valley State in a 2 p.m. doubleheader in Itta Bena, Miss.
