HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team split a pair of non-conference contests on the final day of the Hampton Inn Lion Classic Sunday at North Oak Park.

In the opener, sophomore Katie Duhe had two doubles for Southeastern (4-2), but it was not enough, as the Lady Lions fell 3-1 to Tennessee-Martin.

Southeastern bounced back later in the day to defeat Jackson State, 8-5. Senior Heather Sherrill was 3-for-4 with three runs batted in to lead the Lady Lion attack. Sherrill's final hit was a double – giving her sole possession of the school record with 40 career doubles. The Alexandria native came into her senior campaign tied with former Lady Lion Brooke Kostic for the school's career mark.

In the win over Jackson State, junior Jenna Yoder (2-1) earned the victory with four innings of work. Sophomore Bailey Zievert pitched the final three innings, earning her first career save.

In the day's other action, Mississippi Valley State finished the tournament with a 5-0 record. The Delta Devils defeated Belmont, 8-5, and Southern, 7-0, on field two. In the lone game of the day on field three, Grambling defeated Alabama State, 4-3.

Southeastern will return to action on Wednesday, hosting No. 19 LSU at 5:30 p.m. in North Oak Park.

Game One – Tennessee-Martin 3, Southeastern Louisiana 1
UTM starter Chelsea Jones and Southeastern junior Catherine Gunther (1-1) kept the batting orders silent until Tennessee-Martin broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning. Greer Long led off the frame with a single and later scored on a wild pitch by Gunther. Laura Roberts padded the UTM lead with an RBI single, putting the Skyhawks ahead 2-0.

Southeastern was poised to answer in the top of the sixth inning. Junior Amber Freeman led off the inning with a single, which Duhe followed with a double off the left centerfield fence to put runners at second and third with no outs. UTM reliever Paij Lintz forced three straight groundouts, holding Southeastern to one run and maintaining a 2-1 lead.

UTM got the run back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Megan Latimer opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on an error by Lady Lion sophomore Kelly Lyman. Two groundouts later, Latimer came home to give the Skyhawks a 3-1 advantage.

Lintz retired the Lady Lions in order in the top of the seventh inning to preserve the victory and earn the save.
