HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team's bats came alive on Saturday, allowing the Lady Lions to earn two victories on day two of the Hampton Inn Lion Classic at North Oak Park.

In the opener, Southeastern (3-1) rolled past Southern, 8-0. Sophomore Katie Duhe, senior Heather Sherrill and freshman Lauren Coniglio each homered in the win for the Lady Lions. In her Southeastern debut, junior pitcher Catherine Gunther (1-0) threw a complete-game three-hit shutout, striking out five Lady Jaguars.

In the second game of the day for the Lady Lions, Duhe and freshman Jordan Logan had three hits apiece to lead Southeastern to a 10-5 win over Belmont. Junior Jenna Yoder (1-1) earned her first win of the season with freshman Katelyn Thomason picking up the save with 1.2 innings of shutout relief. Senior Allyson McCubbins broke the game open in the top of the seventh with a three-run home run – her first of the season.

“We feel like our lineup is going to be effective top to bottom and you could see that in our performance today,” Southeastern head coach Pete Langlois said. “We've been very pleased with the performance of Jordan Logan at the top of the lineup. Katie Duhe also came up big for us today, which we know she's capable of doing every time out.”

Also today on field one, North Dakota State defeated Tennessee-Martin, 5-1, in eight innings. In the day's final game, NDSU outlasted Belmont, 9-8.

On Field Two, North Dakota State opened the day with a 3-2, nine-inning win over Grambling. Mississippi Valley State followed with an 8-1 win over Alabama State. In the day's third game on field two, Jackson State rolled past Grambling, 12-1, in five innings. The final game saw Tennessee-Martin roll past Jackson State, 12-1.

In the lone game on field three, Southern rolled past Alabama State, 12-8.

Southeastern will close out tournament play on Sunday, hosting Tennessee-Martin at 10 a.m. and Jackson State at 12:30 p.m.

Game One – Southeastern Louisiana 8, Southern 0
The Lady Lions wasted no time jumping to the lead in the top of the first inning. Sherrill staked Southeastern to a 2-0 advantage with a line shot over the right centerfield fence.

Southeastern padded its lead in the second. McCubbins led off the inning with a double down the left field line. One out later, Coniglio powered her first career home run over the centerfield wall to put the Lady Lions up, 4-0.

Coniglio struck again in the third inning to add to the Lady Lion cushion. With two outs in the frame, the LaPlace native plated two runs with a bases loaded single.

The Jaguars never seriously threatened Gunther. The McLouth, Kan. native - in her first season with Southeastern out of Butler Community College - did not allow Southern to advance a base runner past second base.

Southeastern added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Duhe led off the seventh inning with a line drive home run over the left field. Sophomore Kelly Lyman closed out the scoring with an RBI single to provide the final 8-0 margin.

Game Two – Southeastern Louisiana 10, Belmont 5
After the Lady Lions left the bases loaded in the top of the first inning, Belmont jumped out to a 1-0 lead off Southeastern sophomore starter Bailey Zievert. An RBI single by Cassie Bollin got the scoring started for the Bruins.

Southeastern tied the game in the top of the second. Junior Chelsea Takacs reached on a one-out single and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

Belmont chased Zievert in the second inning, as two wild pitches and an RBI single by Elly Bennett pushed the Bruin advantage to 3-1.

Southeastern retook the lead in the fourth inning, as Duhe's two-run double to the right centerfield gap keyed a three-run frame to give the Lady Lions a 4-3 lead.

Belmont retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Dawn Thoni led off the inning with a home run over the right field fence. Later in the inning, an RBI single by Sara Bentley allowed the Bruins to take a 5-4 lead.

Duhe and freshman Meghan Gomez helped Southeastern retake the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Duhe knotted the score with an RBI double. With the bases loaded, Gomez gave Southeastern the lead for good with an RBI single, putting the Lady Lions up, 6-5.

Southeastern scored four insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Thomason plated the first run with an RBI double, then McCubbins put the game out of reach with a three-run blast over the left field wall.
