LADY LION RUNNERS CLIMB REGIONAL RANKINGS

Southeastern Women's Cross Country Break into South Central Rankings

NEW ORLEANS - Fresh off a third place finish at the LSU Cross Country Festival on Saturday, the Southeastern Louisiana University women's cross country team cracked the South Central Regional's Top 15 list with a No. 14 ranking, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced on Monday.

"This is the first time we've gotten a regional ranking in a few years," head coach Sean Brady said.  "With everything that has gone on: the hurricane, injuries, illnesses; our ladies have really done everything they can to make sure they are competing at their best every week.  This is a great honor to our athletes.  It speaks of how far our distance program has come in a short time.  This is still a young team.  If we can continue to develop, they have the chance to be very special."

Despite having three meets canceled due to Hurricane Gustav and with nagging injuries and illness leaving Southeastern with a depleted squad in the early going, the Lady Lions still managed a pair of top three team finishes to open the season.

Southeastern started strong with a second place finish at South Alabama's Azalea City Classic on Sept. 13 where sophomore Dorcus Kapkiai and senior Everlyne Matonyei combined to finish second and third, respectively.  Two weeks later, it was Matonyei in second and Kapkiai in third as the Lady Lions secured a third place finish.

Southeastern's men's and women's cross country teams will return to action on Saturday when they head to Auburn's Tiger Invitational.
