SUMMERLINS, HARGIS FUEL COMEBACK WIN OVER TULANE

HAMMOND - Junior shortstop Ty Summerlin went 3-for-5 with three doubles, senior thrid baseman Casey Summerlin had a three run homer and redshirt freshman outfielder Cass Hargis had a pair of hits and a two run homer as the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (12-10, 3-3 Southland Conference) rallied from a 5-1 deficit to defeat Tulane (16-7) 12-11 on Tuesday night.

"I'm proud of what our guys did tonight," Southeastern head coach Jay Artigues said. "We got down 5-1, but we kept having good at-bats and we kept competing. If we keep competing like this the rest of the way, I like our chances."

The Green Wave got on the board first, scoring five runs in the first two innings off of Southeastern starter Adam Jones. The Lions scored in the home half of the first after Ty Summerlin's first RBI double scored Hargis, but Southeastern still found themselves on the wrong end of a 5-1 deficit early on.

The Lions inched closer as a solo home run by senior left fielder Xavier Qualls to lead off the thrid made it 5-2 and a two-run double by Ty Summerlin made it 5-4 in the fourth.

After struggling early, Jones settled down, allowing just one hit and one walk as he kept Tulane off the board in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Tulane reclaimed the lead with a run in the sixth to make it 6-4, but a five run Lions' sixth put Southeastern out front once again.

A RBI double by Ty Summerlin, his third one of the night, scored Hargis and put runners at second and third with no outs. An intentional walk to junior designated hitter Brandon Street loaded the bases and a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Chris Ernest made it 6-6, but it was Casey Summerlin's three-run home run that did the most damage, putting Southeastern up 9-6.

The Green Wave answered with a three-run seventh to tie the game, but a two run homer by Hargis in the bottom of the seventh and an RBI single by Ernest in the bottom of the eighth gave the Lions a much-needed 12-9 cushion entering the final frame.

Sophomore right hander Andrew Velez came on in the eighth and retired the side in order thanks to new-found sidearm delivery, but ran into trouble in the ninth. An dropped popup allowed Jared Dyer to reach and a walk to Aja Barto put runners at first and second with no outs. Artigues brought in junior right hander Ryan Collins, who induced a pop up from Warren McFadden for the first out before an RBI single by Seth Henry made it 12-10. An infield hit by Rob Segedin loaded the bases before the Lions locked up the win with a wild play.

A slow roller to second off the bat of Andrew Rodgers led to a force out of Segedin at second for out number two. Rodgers beat the throw to first, allowing Barto to score and make it a 12-11 ballgame. However, the Green Wave tried to catch the Lions napping, sending Henry from second. A strong throw from Ernest retired Henry, giving the Lions a 12-11 win on a 4-6-3-2 double play.

With the win, the Lions even the 2008 Senator's Cup Series at one game apiece. The finale of the three-game season series will take place April 15 at 6:00 p.m. at Tulane. The Lions will return to action on Friday as they open a three-game conference series at McNeese State. Play-by-play will be available on KSLU 90.9 FM and on www.LionSports.net.
