HAMMOND - After a 1-3 week, the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (11-10, 3-3 Southland Conference) will look to return to the form that saw them go 4-1 by scoring 50 runs in five games two weeks ago as they prepare to host perennial College World Series contender Tulane (16-6, 0-0 Conference USA).
The Lions and Green Wave battled for 12 innings in their first meeting in New Orleans on Feb. 26, a contest which Tulane won 4-3. The Lions scored on a throwing error in the top of the 11th only to allow Tulane to tie the game in the bottom of the 11 on a two-out throwing error of their own. Southeastern will be looking to even the 2008 Senator's Cup Series at one game apiece as they continue with a highly competitive 2008 midweek schedule.
"It's always a lot of fun to play against those guys," Southeastern head coach
Jay Artigues said. "They're very talented, very well-coached. When they come in, it's going to be a good atmosphere. Our kids are definitely looking forward to this challenge. They know they're one of the better teams in the country. It's always nice to have an opportunity to knock off a team like that."
Southeastern will be sending Adam Jones (1-0, 3.38 ERA) out for his fifth appearance and fourth start of the season. The Lions hope the senior lefty, who has pitched well lately, will show the same poise he showed in shutting out Stephen F. Austin by allowing just two hits in 2.0 innings of relief on March 16 and picking up his first win of the season on March 12 against Jackson State by allowing just two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six over 5.0 innings. The Green Wave will counter with RHP Jonathan Garrett (1-1, 2.31 ERA).
The Lions will also look to create more consistent run support for their pitchers. After scoring 50 runs through the season's first two weeks, Southeastern doubled its season run total to 100 during a five-game stretch from March 11-16. Last week the Lions scored 19 runs in four games en route to a 1-3 record in week three.
Southeastern still boasts a league-leading 3.99 team ERA (83 ER/187.1 IP) and bring in two of the Southland Conference's top hitters in redshirt freshman Cass Hargis (.375 BA, ninth in SLC) and junior shortstop Ty Summerlin (28 hits, eighth in SLC).
The Lions will be looking for their first win against Tulane since Feb. 11 of last season when the Lions beat the No. 16 Green Wave 4-0 to secure a two-of-three series win in New Orleans on opening weekend.
First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Alumni Field.
