LIONS SET TO PLAY ANNUAL SPRING GAME ON SATURDAY

HAMMOND - Southeastern Louisiana University will wrap up spring football practice drills under first-year coach Mike Lucas on Saturday when it holds its annual spring game at 2 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.

The Lions, who will hold a Friday afternoon session in shorts and helmets before its 15th and final practice of the spring, will be split into a Green and White team. The teams will play a pair of 10-minute quarters in the first half before the Lions are scheduled to play two eight-minute quarters in the second half.

Tickets are available from the Southeastern Athletic Ticket Office by calling (985) 549-5466. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children. All Southeastern students are admitted free with a valid I.D. The Spirit of the Southland Band and Southeastern Lionettes will be in attendance and current season ticket holders will be able to renew their tickets for the 2007 season.

Offensively, quarterbacks Bradd Schlosser and Brian Babin have staged a battle to replace departed signal-caller Seth Babin while the Lions look to replace four-year starter Donald Usry at center.

Receivers Merrick Lanaux, Crawford Kilpatrick and Byron Ross are among eight returning starters on offense for the Lions that includes All-Southland Conference running back Jay Lucas along with offensive linemen Johnny Flowers and Earl Cager.

Defensively, the Lions will look to replace eight starters. Pacing the Lions' defense, under new coordinator Matt Webb is sophomore Tommy Connors, Vince Strickland, Keithshone Dantzler and George Leverette.

Southeastern, which will play its fifth season - and third in the Southland Conference - opens its season with three of its first four games on the road beginning Aug. 30 at New Mexico State. The Lions will face Big 12 opponent Kansas and Conference USA foe Tulane on the road in non-conference play while hosting Kentucky Wesleyan in their home opener on Sept. 15.
