HAMMOND - The Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team fought to a scoreless tie with Texas State in the Southland Conference opener for both teams Friday afternoon at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.
The Lady Lions (5-2-3, 0-0-1 SLC) and Texas State (1-8-1, 0-0-1 SLC) battled hard, but both teams missed several prime scoring opportunities in the match. Southeastern in now unbeaten in its last nine regular season matches versus league competition.
Southeastern out-shot Texas State, 6-2, in regulation. The Lady Lions were on the attack for the majority of the match, holding the Bobcats without a shot in the second half. However, Southeastern continues to struggle finishing and putting the ball in the net.
"We had several excellent opportunities to win the match, but we couldn't capitalize," Southeastern head coach
Blake Hornbuckle said. "Danielle Shank did a great job winning every ball in the midfield, while our backs continue to play very well.
"We controlled the match during regulation, but we just weren't able to find the net," Hornbuckle said. "We played well against a very tough conference opponent. Once we can find some offensive consistency, we have the ability to do some great things during conference play."
Southeastern had several scoring chances during regulation, with Shank playing several excellent balls on set pieces. Janae Sheldon, Kristin McDonald and Candice Wallace each had near misses for Southeastern in the first 90 minutes.
Texas State came out on the attack with a vengeance in the first overtime. Southeastern senior goalkeeper Holly Moran made several key saves for the Lady Lions. Near the end of the first overtime, TSU's Jerelyn Lemmie rocketed a shot that hit the crossbar and was cleared by freshman Nicole Brannigan.
Several minutes later, Southeastern sophomore Dana Mayer headed in a goal past TSU goalkeeper Amanda Byrd, but it was ruled that Mayer was offside.
Southeastern nearly ended the match again midway through the second overtime. On a Shank corner kick, the ball rolled loose past Byrd, but Gloria Burkhart's shot rolled just wide.
Southeastern will look to get its first league win on Sunday, hosting Texas-San Antonio at 1 p.m. at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.
