HAMMOND - Three former student-athletes and a legendary administrator will be the newest inductees into the prestigious Southeastern Louisiana University Athletics Hall of Fame during Southeastern's Southland Conference showdown against Central Arkansas on Oct. 20 in Strawberry Stadium.
Former volleyball standout Anne Bauer-Peytavin, golfer Martin du Toit, football standout Mac Faul and retired Athletic Trainer Bob "Doc' Goodwin will be enshrined during halftime of the Southeastern-UCA contest, increasing the number of members to 111.
Bauer-Peytavin, who starred on the volleyball court as the Lady Lions' setter, directed one of the greatest four-year periods in Southeastern Athletics history helping the Lady Lions to a 106-49 record and four Trans America Athletic Conference West Division titles. The native of Dayton, Ohio finished her playing career in 1996 as the Lady Lions' all-time leader in assists (4,852) and held the top three single-season marks including a school-record 1,558 in 1995.
The three-time All-TAAC selection and 1996-97 Southeastern Female Athlete of the Year directed an offense that included fellow Hall of Fame members Christie Mikolajchek and Darci Starr to a school-record 28 wins in 1995 and 1996. She played a key role in Southeastern's school-record 25-match win streak that was the longest in the nation in 1996 and placed the Lady Lions in the AVCA Central Region polls.
The first golfer to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, du Toit helped Southeastern to its first Southland Conference championship in 1998 and a 23rd-place finish at the NCAA Championships. The 1997-97 Southeastern Male Athlete of the Year, du Toit earned a berth in the 1997 NCAA East Regionals as an individual and finished second in school history with a 73.95 career stroke average.
Selected as the first Division I golf All-American in school history in 1997, du Toit was named the Trans America Athletic Conference, the Louisiana Sports Writers Association and Louisiana Athletic Directors' Association Golfer-of-the-Year after ranking 11th nationally and posting the lowest stroke average (72.09) in school history.
Regarded as the top blocking fullback in Southeastern history, Faul lettered for the Lions from 1966-69 and helped pave the way for Ted Glaser and Darrell Beard, who each led Southeastern in rushing. Faul, who was named to the All-Gulf States Conference team in 1967, led Southeastern in rushing and finished his career with 1,362 yards on 363 carries - which is currently eighth in school history.
Faul, a Baton Rouge native who prepped at Redemptorist High School, was selected as the Lions' team captain as a senior and helped Glaser rush for a then-school record 203 yards and three touchdowns in a 24-19 win at Northwestern State in 1968.
Goodwin enters the Hall of Fame for his distinguished service that spanned 31 years as Southeastern's head athletic trainer. Goodwin served as advisor to Southeastern's Student Athletic Trainers Association and was instrumental in helping to create the university's Sports Medicine curriculum. He has been a long-time active leader in the Southeastern Alumni Association and its Tangi Chapter, serving as president of both and playing a key role in events such as the construction of the Alumni Center and Homecoming. The Association honored him with its Distinguished Service Award and the L.E. Chandler Award for service to students, an award he originally created.
He has also been active in the Louisiana and International Special Olympic Games, serving as medical director, site coordinator and volunteer. He was a charter and founding member of the Louisiana Sports Medicine Society and was instrumental in creating the North Oaks Sports Medicine Program to insure high school athletes receive athletic training coverage in Tangipahoa Parish. He worked to pass the state law that requires that athletic trainers be licensed.
Goodwin was also active in the 1992 U.S. Track and Field Trials in New Orleans, the 1993 NCAA Track and Field Trials in New Orleans and the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and worked in the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons Football Training Camps.
His honors and awards include induction into the Louisiana Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Sports Medicine Society Jim Finks Award, the National Athletic Trainers Association District IX Service Award and the President's Award for Excellence in 2001.
The Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame recognizes annually the accomplishments of past student-athletes as well as significant contributors to the program. For more information on the Hall of Fame, log onto the official Southeastern Athletics website, www.LionSports.net.
