Felton Huggins, Southeastern Louisiana University's all-time leader in receptions, receiving yardage and touchdown catches agreed to terms Sunday with the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars signing as a free agent the team announced.
Huggins, a 6-2, 181-pound wide receiver, is the second NFL free agent acquisition hailing from Southeastern over the past two years. He joins former star running back Ray Perkins who signed as a free agent with the San Diego Chargers in 2005 following a stellar two-year career with the Lions. Perkins is still with the Chargers after earning a spot on the practice squad during the 2005 campaign.
A third-team all-America selection following the 2004 season, Huggins notched every school receiving record including single game, single season and career during his three years as a Lion.
"This is a great opportunity for Felton," remarked Southeastern head football coach Dennis Roland. "He's an outstanding young man with unlimited potential and a great work ethic. We wish him all the best."
Despite never playing receiver until joining Southeastern for the 2003 season, Huggins finished his career with 2,350 receiving yards on 162 catches and 22 touchdowns - all school career records. His 84 catches for 1,313 yards and 13 touchdowns set single season marks in 2004 and his 11 catches for 266 yards in the 2004 season-opener set the single game receiving record for yardage.
Huggins was a two-time all-Region pick, was named to two all-America teams in 2004 and was a first-team All-Southland Conference selection following the 2005 season.
One of 12 free agent acquisitions announced by the Jaguars, Huggins joins a squad that went 12-4 last season and advanced to the first round of the playoffs before losing to New England 28-3 in an AFC Wild Card game.
