LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - They were teammates on the Australian Olympic team that captured the silver medal at the 2004 Summer Games in Athens, and in the inaugural World Baseball Classic, former Southeastern standouts Gavin Fingleson and Jeff Williams were part of another historic team.
Fingleson and Williams, along with another player with Southeastern ties - Craig Lewis - were part of Australia's 60-man squad in the 16-team tournament that concludes March 20. Fingleson, who played at Southeastern from 1998-99, was the only member of the trio on the Aussie's 30-man squad with Williams and Lewis on the 60-man provisional roster.
In three games in the WBC, Fingleson finished went 1-for-5 at the plate for the Australians, who went 0-3 in Pool D that included powers Venezuela and the Dominican Republic.
Williams, a member of the Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame, pitched for the Lions from 1992-96 and finished second in school history in strikeouts (256), third in innings pitched (285.2) and fourth in wins (21).
Lewis, the 1997 National Junior College Player of the Year at Wallace State (Ala.) Community College, signed with the Lions for the 1998 season, but never played after signing a free agent contract with the New York Yankees.
