WOMEN'S SOCCER: EARLY GOALS LIFT BSC PAST SOUTHEASTERN, 2-1

MOBILE, Ala. - Birmingham-Southern's Julie Andra scored in the 32nd minute to break a 1-1 tie, as BSC defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 2-1, in the final match of the KELME Port City Classic Saturday afternoon at "The Cage" on the campus of the University of South Alabama.

Southeastern fell to 0-2 with the loss, despite taking 15 shots to BSC's 11. Birmingham-Southern evened their record at 1-1. The match was originally scheduled for Sunday at 12 p.m., but the threat of Hurricane Katrina led to the match's rescheduling.

Birmingham-Southern jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match's early stages. Caitlin Gordon, Anne McIntyre and Christy Dettmer hooked up on a breakaway, with Dettmer scoring her first goal of the season just under 16 minutes into the match.

The Lady Lions would quickly even the score, however. In the 21st minute, Chelsea Kling tied the match with her first goal of the season.

Andra gave BSC the lead back 11 minutes later. Her first goal of the season was sent past Southeastern starting goalkeeper Crista Wood, giving Birmingham-Southern the lead for good.

Neither team could get anything going offensively in the second half. BSC's Andria Gray and Southeastern's Holly Moran came in for their respective teams in place of starting goalkeepers Tina Ross and Wood. Moran and teammate Aimee Davis were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Southeastern will look to rebound from its rough start on Friday, when they host Belmont at 4:30 p.m. in the Lady Lions' 2005 home opener at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.
