WESTWEGO - Southeastern's Jason Waguespack went 2-for-3 with four RBI and belted his first career home run as the Lions erupted for 14 runs over a four-inning span and defeated Loyola, 15-6, in a non-conference game Tuesday at Segnette Field.
Freshman Rob Territo added three hits and scored twice for Southeastern (4-3), which got 15 hits for the third time this season and matched its season high in runs scored. Kyle Ginn and Tony Suarez each drove in two runs apiece for Southeastern, which returns to action on Friday when it begins a three-game series at Alumni Field against Ohio Valley Conference preseason favorite Southeast Missouri.
Trailing 2-1 after three innings, Southeastern sent nine men to the plate and scored four runs in the fourth to build a 5-2 lead it would never relinquish. Waguespack drove in the first run of the inning when his one-out single off Jeb Bauer (0-1) scored Ryan Spencer, who led off with a double. Gary Duhe followed with an RBI double to center and Ginn singled through the left side to drive in Waguespack and Duhe.
Southeastern added a run in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead before erupting for seven runs in the sixth, sending 10 men to the plate. Ginn led off with a single and Steve Clevenger walked before a Loyola error led to the first Lion run. Greenwich drove in Randy Roth with a sacrifice fly before Territo delivered an RBI single to right, scoring Trent Hebert.
Waguespack, who had one extra-base hit in his first two seasons at Southeastern, then drove in three runs when he drilled a pitch by Casey Cadella that cleared the fence just inside the left-field foul pole to give Southeastern a 13-3 lead.
Suarez added a two-run blast in the seventh off Cadella, one of eight pitchers used by Loyola (7-6), which had its four-game win streak snapped.
Jonathan Taylor (1-0), a senior making his first career start for Southeastern, pitched four innings and struck out three to earn his first-ever win for the Lions. Brandon Carlton, Chad Catalano and Anthony Masson scattered six hits over the final five innings for the Lions.
Kevin Kalina led the Wolfpack, who posted 11 hits in the contest, with two hits while driving in a run in a three-run eighth. Sudyka, who finished 1-for-3, gave Loyola its only lead of the game when he drove in two runs with a double in the third.
