LIONS, JAGUARS PREPARE TO RENEW HARDWOOD RIVALRY

HAMMOND - Looking to extend its winning streak to four games, the Southeastern men's basketball team returns to the court on Monday when it plays host to in-state rival Southern University in the University Center.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net. Tickets are available at the Southeastern Athletic Ticket Office at (985) 549-5466 or www.LionSports.net. Southeastern students are admitted free with a valid student ID.

Southeastern (3-1), playing the second of three consecutive games at home, pulled away from a second-half rally and defeated Spring Hill College, 79-65, on Thursday behind Quennell Green's 19 points. Ricky Woods added 16 points, nine rebounds and six blocks while Chris Lee added a career-high 14 points as the Lions shot a season-high 52 percent from the floor and drained nine 3-pointers.

Woods, the Southland Conference leader in rebounds (12.0) and blocks (3.8), paces Southeastern in scoring at 16.8 points per game with Green (14.3) next. Daryl Cohen (12.3 ppg.), Lee (8.5) and Jonathan Walker (7.0) follow for the Lions, who close out their homestand on Thursday against Belhaven.

Southern (0-5), which has faced three major Division I opponents in that span, dropped a 61-52 decision at Louisiana Tech on Saturday. The Jaguars, under first-year coach Rob Spivery have dropped decisions to Texas, LSU and Texas A&M with an overtime loss to Sacramento State included.

Chris Alexander, who has led Southern in scoring the last four games, leads the Jaguars in scoring (12.2) followed by Penn State transfer Forrest Riley-Smith (8.8) and Peter Cipriano (8.4).

The schools, located 45 miles apart, will meet for the 27th time overall with Southern holding a 16-10 lead. The series has seen exciting finishes since its inception, including 11 games decided by eight points or less. The last two games in Hammond have been decided by a combined six points with Southeastern winning both contests.

The last meeting in Hammond saw Southeastern take a hard-fought 76-71 victory on Dec. 6, 2003, as Amir Abdur-Rahim scored 16 of his 23 points in the second half. The game saw 10 ties and 18 lead changes until Abdur-Rahim's 3-pointer with under two minutes remaining helped Southeastern pull away.

Southern claimed a 67-65 win in last season's game, as Alexander scored 16 points in the game and Mott drained a 3-pointer that gave the Jaguars a 65-63 lead with 1:22 remaining.
