Southeastern senior quarterback Trey Willie has been named national I-AA offensive player of the week by Don Hansen's Football Gazette for his performance against Nicholls State.
Willie, a native of Loranger, earned the honor along with Illinois State's Laurent Robinson as co-offensive player of the week while Alabama A&M's Marcus Black and Mississippi Valley State's Tyler Knight were selected as defensive players of the week.
In the best performance of his career, Willie accounted for 454 (eighth most in Southland Conference history) of the Lions' 486 yards of total offense and all four Lion scores in a 38-28 loss to league-leading Nicholls State. He was 38-of-57 passing for a career-high 403 yards and three touchdowns to only one interception. He also led the team in rushing with 51 yards on 15 carries with a score.
His total offense, passing yardage, pass attempt and pass completion marks all set or tied (completions) for Southland Conference season highs -- all against the second-ranked defense in the league. Willie's passing total was the seventh-most in Southeastern history and he becomes only the second Southeastern player ever to pass for more than 400 yards in a single game. Willie's 454 yards of total offense against Nicholls was the seventh-highest total this season in I-AA.
As his first season seeing any appreciable action at quarterback has progressed, Willie has developed into arguably the top quarterback in the Southland Conference as the Lions' starter. He leads the conference in total offense with just under 2,900 yards including 2,498 yards passing. His 375 yards leads the Lions in rushing and his total offense average of 319.2 yards per game ranks third nationally.
Through nine games, he has completed nearly 60 percent of his passes (223-of-372) with 18 touchdowns to only nine interceptions. He has thrown at least one TD pass in each of the nine games.
