LAFAYETTE - The Southeastern men's tennis team won four of the six flight titles up for grabs at the 2005 Hibernia Ragin' Cajuns Classic, held this weekend on the Louisiana-Lafayette campus.
Ilie Babinciuc won the Flight B singles title, while newcomer Vlad Paunic took home the Flight B consolation singles championship. The Lions rolled through both of the doubles flights. Southeastern's Haris Huremovic and Ondrej Krivka earned the Flight A doubles title, while Babinciuc and Paunic teamed up to win the Flight B doubles crown.
"With the hurricanes canceling several of our earlier trips, we knew this was a big tournament for us," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "We challenged our players to step up their game this weekend and they responded. Our team played tennis the way it's supposed to be played this weekend. They gave a great effort and I am very proud of our performance."
Babinciuc, a sophomore from Moldova, was the top player for the Lions, going undefeated in both singles and doubles play. In the opening round of Flight B singles play, Babinciuc drummed Alcorn State's Shashank Kulkarni, 6-1, 6-2, and advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-3 second-round victory over Alessandro Dipalma of Arkansas-Little Rock.
In the quarterfinals, Babinciuc ousted Dylan Mezey of Southern Miss, 6-1, 6-2, before sweeping past Mississippi State's Ryan Farlow, 6-3, 6-2. In the championship round, Babinciuc finished up the title without dropping a set through the whole bracket with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Florent Girod of Mississippi State.
In doubles play, Babinciuc and Paunic opened Flight B play with an 8-3 victory over Lamar's Ben Weatherford and Tyler Cobb. The Lion duo then advanced to the finals with an 8-5 victory over LSU's Jose Moncada and Will Lefevre. In the finals, Babinciuc and Paunic closed out their title run by getting past Mississippi State's Farlow and Eric Lim, 8-6.
Huremovic and Krivka got past several top flight teams to earn the Flight A doubles championship. In the opening round, they took out Dusan Tabak and Shaun Elison of Louisiana-Lafayette. Southern Miss' Marc Lux and Domagot Anic were no match for the Southeastern pair in the quarterfinals, going down in defeat, 8-4.
Huremovic and Krivak pounded Mississippi State's Girod and Pierre Mouillon, 8-3 to earn a berth in the title match. In the finals, they defeated UL-Lafayette's top doubles team of Robin Ley and Amanjot Singh, 8-3.
The tournament was the Lions' final one of the fall season. The Lions will open the spring season in late January.
