HAMMOND - The Southeastern women's soccer team will host Southland Conference foe McNeese State on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at the Southeastern Soccer Complex in a match with major postseason implications.
Southeastern (3-8-1, 1-3 SLC) currently sits in fifth place in the league standings. A win over McNeese State (3-7-1, 0-1-1 SLC) would greatly enhance the Lady Lions' chances of finishing in the top six and earning a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament. The six-team tournament is scheduled for Nov. 3-6 in Natchitoches.
The Lady Lions also have a chance to make history on Wednesday, as a victory would be the 100th win in the history of the program, which began in 1995. Heading into Wednesday's action, Southeastern has a 99-93-15 record all-time.
The Lady Lions and Cowgirls were originally scheduled to meet on Sept. 30 in Lake Charles, but because of the effects of Hurricane Rita the match was postponed. With the McNeese State team staying on the Southeastern campus, the decision was made to move the match to Hammond.
Southeastern's play has steadily improved over the past several weeks. The return of Danielle Shank, a sophomore from Irvine, Calif., from injury has sparked the offense, as has the steady growth of freshman Janae Sheldon, a native of Yorba Linda, Calif. Shank and Sheldon are tied for the team lead among active players with four goals and 10 points.
Veterans Lindsey Dyck and Jen Mongiardi have done an excellent job of stabilizing the midfield. Dyck is second on the team with three goals scored, while Mongiardi is tied with Amy Schexander for the team lead in assists. Both Mongiardi and Schexnayder have dished out three assists on the season.
The Southeastern defensive backfield of Kari Yost, Lindsay Garito and Sarah Cheung has continued to be a force. Chelsea Kling has filled in admirably in goal for the Lady Lions, allowing two goals in just under 183 minutes of action.
McNeese State is coming off a tough 2-1 loss to Texas State on Sunday. Cynthia Torres, Audrey Smith and Ja'Nae Powell lead the team with three goals apiece. Renee Landers and Sarah Overfelt pace the squad with three assists each. Aubrey Ross has been impressive in goal and comes into the match with a 1.08 goals against average.
Following Wednesday's match, Southeastern will close out its regular season home schedule versus Louisiana-Monroe on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
