Southeastern Louisiana University linebacker Damien Huren has added to his already burgeoning list of national awards following his outstanding individual defensive performance Saturday in the Lions win over Northern Colorado.
On Tuesday, Huren, a junior from Amite, was named the Don Hansen's Football Gazette National Defensive Player of the Week and added the Louisiana Sports Writer's Association defensive honor as well. He had already been named defensive player of the week by the Sports Network, I-AA.org and College Sports Television which were released Monday. The four awards mark the most ever for a Lion football player for a single performance and he is the third player to earn national recognition this season joining quarterback Martin Hankins and receiver Felton Huggins.
Against Northern Colorado, Huren was unstoppable recording a Division I record six sacks for a loss of 29 yards in the Lions' 26-13 win. He also led the Lions with 13 total tackles including 10 solo stops, recovered a fumble that set up a Lion score and broke up one pass.
His sack total was a part of 11 team sacks for the Lions that set a new school-record and was three off the pace of the I-AA mark.
Huren and the Lions will be back in action this weekend hosting Mercyhurst College on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.
Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling the athletics ticket office at 985-549-2142 or logging on to the official Southeastern website, www.LionSports.net.
