SOUTHEASTERN HOOPS SET TO FACE TULANE IN KEY MATCHUP

HAMMOND -- Coming off its most impressive performance of the season, the Southeastern men's basketball team returns to the floor on Saturday when it visits Conference USA member Tulane in a 7:30 p.m. game at Fogelman Arena.

The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.

Southeastern (4-2) enters the game against Tulane (5-1) after shooting a season-high 62 percent in an 81-63 win at Southern on Monday. Michael Gardener and Nate Lofton scored 16 points each to lead the Lions, who placed five players in double figures and won for the first time on the road in three games this season.

Leading Southeastern into Saturday's contest the senior duo of Amir Abdur-Rahim, who is ninth in the Southland Conference in scoring (15.3) and Terry West (13.2), ranked 14th in the league. Junior college transfer Jonathan Patton averages 9.7 points per game for the Lions while Lofton, who prepped at New Orleans' L.E. Rabouin High School, is next at 9.5 points and a SLC-leading 10.5 rebounds per game.

Tulane, playing for the first time since an 83-66 win over Northwestern State on Dec. 9, have won its last two games since a 69-66 loss to cross-town rival UNO on Dec. 3. The Green Wave have had the luxury of playing every game this season on their home floor and will play nine of their first 11 games at Fogelman with a trip to LSU on Tuesday and a game at New Orleans Arena against Mississippi State on Dec. 27 as the lone contests away from home.

Four players average in double figures for the Green Wave, paced by former John Curtis standout Ben Benfield's team-high 13.5 average. Quincy Davis, who is making a team-high 63 percent of his field goal attempts, averages 13.2 points while Vytas Tatarunas added 12.0 points and 9.8 rebounds and Wayne Tinsley 10.8 points per game.

The game marks the first time both teams have played since 1997-98 when the Green Wave took a 104-73 victory in New Orleans. The Lions' lone win in the series came on Feb. 1, 1961 when they defeated the Green Wave in New Orleans, 87-83.

After its games against Tulane, the Southeastern will take off for the Christmas holiday before resuming action Dec. 29-30 at the Big R/Holiday Stores Classic in Bozeman, Mont. The Lions will open up against Southern Conference opponent Western Carolina, led by current NCAA scoring leader Kevin Martin, in the first round before facing either host Montana State or Morgan State the following day.
