HAMMOND -- The Southeastern women's basketball team will host the Houston Jaguars in its final exhibition game Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the University Center.
Southeastern will open up the regular season on Saturday, when they welcome Loyola (N.O.) to Hammond for a 3 p.m. matchup. The Lady Lions opened up their exhibition schedule with a 66-60 win over the Jackson Babes on Nov. 7.
In the exhibition opener, junior transfer Nakeya Downing had an impressive debut, grabbing 20 boards to go with 12 points. Senior guard Shanna Achord added 10 points while fellow seniors Michelle Gainey and Melissa Stoevsand pulled down 10 rebounds apiece, as Southeastern finished the game with a 68-44 rebound advantage.
Tuesday's opponent, the Houston Jaguars is a traveling team of former collegiate players that was founded in 1997 to help players continue their post-collegiate careers. One familiar face for Southeastern fans on the Houston roster is Stacey Turner, a two-time All-Southland Conference performer for the Lady Lions from 1999-2001. Turner scored 15 points in the Jags' 119-117 double-overtime loss to UTEP last Saturday night.
The game will be the first half of a doubleheader with the Southeastern men's team, which faces the Spirit Express in the nightcap at 7:45 p.m. Live stats for both games will be available via the Southeastern Athletics' website, www.LionSports.net.
