OXFORD, Miss. – Southeastern Louisiana senior Alex Young and freshman Ashley Davis were part of a record-setting day by the throwers at the Ole Miss Classic on Saturday.

    Young set an Ole Miss Track & Field Complex record in winning the hammer throw while Davis broke her own school mark in the women's shot put.

    The meet was the final regular season one for the Lions and Lady Lions. They will next compete in the Southland Conference Championships starting Friday at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans.

    "We had a very successful day in Oxford," Southeastern assistant coach Corey Mistretta said. "We came into this meet looking to fine tune a few things for conference and accomplished everything we were looking for and really shined in a couple of areas. We are super excited about next week and will be finalizing our preparations this week while trying to keep everyone resting and healthy. Everyone on the team is excited about the conference meet being in New Orleans where we can compete in front on the Lion faithful."

    Young threw 234 feet, 9.5 inches on his fifth attempt to break the complex hammer record of 230-4.5 set by Steffan Nerdal in 2009. It was also the second-longest throw in Southeastern history, eclipsed only by Young's throw of 235-5 at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays earlier this season. Young also threw 234-7 on his first attempt of the day.

    Davis threw 53-7 in taking third in the shot put, breaking the school record of 51-7.75 she set at the Texas Relays. She also increased her lead in the conference by over two meters and moved into 17^th place in the East region.

    Junior Natalia Redondo finished second in the hammer with a mark of 174-0.75.

    Freshman Grant O'Callaghan had a pair of second-place finishes in the 1,500 meters (4 minutes, 0.29 seconds) and the 3,000 (9:10.42). Senior Harry Wiggins was third in 4:00.68 and 9:23.51, respectively.

    Senior Dantrayl Sanders had a good day both on the track and in the field. He finished third in the long jump at 22-4.5 while setting personal bests in both the 100 (10.74) and 200 (21.94).

    Freshman Justin Taylor also ran a career best in placing third in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.62. Sophomore Breanne Bias finished fifth in the 100 hurdles in a personal-best 14.67.

    Senior Addison Martinez cleared 12-6.75 for seventh in the pole vault.
    
    Other throw records set at the meet were by Nike's Gwen Berry, who broke the American record in the women's hammer throw (251-10), and Ole Miss' Brian Williams who eclipsed the facility record in the men's discus (201-4).
