BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Southeastern Louisiana brought only four student-athletes to the Samford Open Saturday but that quartet made their presence known in the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Senior sprinter
Sharrona Williams tied her school record in the 60 meters while junior
Devin King set a meet record in winning the pole vault. Sophomore Marcell Kecskemety, competing in his first meet as a Lion, had Southeastern's best shot put of the season, while senior
Julian Maze added a fifth-place finish in the triple jump.
"We brought just a handful of kids but we certainly made our presence felt today," Southeastern head coach
Sean Brady said. "It was nice to hear Southeastern over the loudspeaker several times. We definitely accomplished the goal of getting some new people competitions and getting some who missed competitions early."
Williams came in third in the 60 in 7.56 seconds, tying the time she ran at the 2016 Southland Championships. That time is also the third best in the Southland Conference this season.
King won his fourth straight pole vault title of the season with a vault of 17 feet, 6.5 inches. That mark eclipsed the standard of 16-4.75 set by SIU's Chad Weaver in the 2013 meet.
Kecskemety took fourth in the shot put with a throw of 54-08.25. That throw is also the fourth-best mark in the conference.
Maze finished fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 45-10.75.
Southeastern will travel to Baton Rouge for the LSU Twilight on Friday. The Southland Indoor Championships are scheduled for Feb. 22-23 at the CrossPlex.
