Box Score NEW ORLEANS, La. – What looked like a potential slugfest in the first inning, settled into a tight pitchers duel as Southeastern Louisiana dropped a 5-3 descision at Tulane Tuesday.
Southeastern (3-1) scored two runs in the first inning, taking advantage of a Green Wave wild pitch. Center fielder
Corey Bryan struck out to open the game, but the pitch got past Tulane catcher Cameron Burns allowing Bryan to reach base.
Jesse Buratt jumped on the next pitch and pushed a single into right.
Aaron Haag followed a
Harry Slade sacrifice bunt with a single to left, driving in Bryan and sending Buratt to third. Buratt scored on
Jameson Fisher's sac fly to left.
Freshman left-hander
Kyle Cedotal (1-1) gave up a single and a double to open the game, then walked Tulane outfielder Brandon Boudreaux to load the bases. The Denham Springs native settled down and retired the next 14 consecutive batters, but a first-inning sac fly plated the Green Wave's first run.
The Lions maintained a one-run lead into the sixth when Tulane (3-1) pushed across four runs to take the lead.
Southeastern answered with a run in the seventh, but that was all the Lions could muster against the Green Wave pitching staff.
Right-hander Tyler Mapes (1-1) picked up the win for Tulane and Andrew Garner acquired his first save of the season. Cedotal, despite a solid performance, suffered the loss for the Lions. In his first career start, Cedotal allowed three runs, all earned, on four hits in 5.1 innings pitched.
Southeastern stays on the road this coming weekend, facing BYU and LSU in Baton Rouge, La. The Lions have a pair of 1 p.m. games Friday and Saturday against BYU. Southeastern tangles with No. 2-ranked LSU Friday at 7 p.m.
The Baton Rouge Red Stick Chapter of the Southeastern Alumni Association will sponsor a post-game tailgate after Saturday's 1 p.m. game against BYU at Alex Box Stadium.
