HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team returned to action on Tuesday, battling high temperatures and humidity as the Lions worked out in full gear for over two hours on the Southeastern Practice Fields.
The Lions, who open the season on Sept. at SEC newcomer Missouri, continued working all phases of their game with emphasis on their inside running game, field goals and extra points, kickoff coverage and return and third-and-long situations.
“I think the heat got to us today,” Southeastern head coach
Ron Roberts said. “It was the first time we came out and it was really hot. Some guys have got to learn to fight through some things when they're tired and concentrate on eliminating the mental mistakes.”
Southeastern will be off on Wednesday as classes begin at the University. The Lions will return to practice on Thursday at 3:15 p.m. All practices are open to the public.
“It's going to be a continuous basis from here on out,” Roberts said of his team's mission heading into game week that will begin on Aug. 26. “That's what it's about. Getting better as a team and elimination of errors … that's the biggest thing that we have to do right now. There are too many mental mistakes taking place.”
The Lions will take part in the annual “Lionpawlooza” on Friday from 6-8 p.m. outside LaCarreta Mexican Restaurant. The event, which is part of Hammond's “Hot August Night,” will include autographs by the Lions' football and volleyball teams and a pep rally with performances by the Southeastern Cheerleaders and Lionettes along with Southeastern's “Spirit of the Southland” Marching Band.
