Southeastern Athletics Graduates 47 at Spring Commencement Exercises

Lions, Lady Lions well represented among 1,200-plus who had degrees conferred

HAMMOND – Forty-seven members of the Southeastern Louisiana Athletics family were among the over 1,200 students that had degrees conferred at the university's Spring 2012 commencement exercises Saturday in the University Center.
 
The Southeastern track and field program led the department with eight graduates. All-American pole vaulter Kovey Simmons highlight the group, while Brittany Blackmon, Ernestine Carodine, Kim Gastinell, Naomi Jeruto, Andrew Pennington, Petra Poznic and Michael Rheams also represent head coach Sean Brady's squads.
 
The school's all-time leading receiver, Simmie Yarborough, was among the football program's seven graduates. Yarborough was joined by Avery Crooks, Craig Duronslet, Sean Gremillion, Cody Kennedy, Kyle Nichols and Evan Niles.
 
The Southeastern softball program also had seven graduates on Saturday. Academic All-American shortstop Katie Duhe completed her master's degree, while former teammate Chelsea Takacs also completed her graduate studies. Lauren Coniglio, Vicki Honeycutt, Katie Matthews, Meghan Gomez and Heather Grivas all earned bachelor's degrees.
 
The Southeastern baseball and women's basketball programs each produced three graduates. Jacob Fisher, Jonathan Pace and Torin Lucas represented head coach Jay Artigues' Lions, while Lady Lions Kelli Jenkins, Amber Crenshaw and Jessica Sommers also earned degrees.
 
The tennis and volleyball programs had two graduates apiece. Morgane Dadot of the women's tennis team earned her bachelor's degree, while former men's tennis player Jakub Kwasniewicz completed his graduate degree. All-Southland performer Paige Dollison and fellow four year letterwinner Arianne Cruckshank each received bachelor's degree, representing head coach Geno Frugoli's volleyball squad.
 
Brandon Fortenberry, who will return to the Lions in 2012-13, was the lone men's basketball graduate. Three-time All-Southland Conference defender Kyle MacIntosh was the only graduate from the women's soccer team.
 
Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Cary Berthelot saw 13 products of the athletic training program earn degrees on Saturday. Graduate assistant Justin Martens earned his master's degree, while student athletic trainers Mackenzie Bowman, Matthew Doell, Megan Dufresne, Ashley Eusea, Jonathan Ferguson, Jonathan Gantt, Katherine Gonzalez, Tyler Guillot, Josh Jackson, Blayne Lewis, Alan Miller and Nicole Phegley earned bachelor's degrees in athletic training.
