Alford Earns Southland, LSWA, CFPA Weekly Honors

Senior sets single-game record for punt return yards

HAMMOND – After setting a single-game record for most punt return yards, highlighted by the third-longest return in school history, Southeastern Louisiana University football player Robert Alford was named Monday as the Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week in a release by the league office.

Alford, a Hammond native, also earned the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Special Teams Player of the Week and the FCS National Punt Returner Performer of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) after returning four punts for 105 yards and a touchdown in Southeastern's 31-21 victory at Lamar on Saturday.

The senior, who earned Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors last week, recorded a 75-yard punt return in the third quarter that gave the Lions a 24-14 lead. The return was the third longest in school history behind a 95-yard return by Bobby Dugas against Florence State (now North Alabama) in 1958 and an 86-yard return by David Patterson against Illinois State in 1980.

Alford, who also added an interception in the game, had a potential 59-yard return for a touchdown in the second quarter wiped out by a penalty.

Southeastern's Tyler Stoddard and Xavier Roberson each earned Honor Roll status by the Southland Conference for their respective performances while Stoddard was also named to the CFPA Honor Roll.

Southeastern (2-3, 2-0 Southland) will return to action on Saturday when it faces FBS opponent UAB in a 2 p.m. contest at Legion Field.
