HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team returns to action for its second contest against a Conference USA school when the Lions travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to face Southern Miss at M.M. Roberts Stadium.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.

Coming off a 63-6 win over Savannah State last Saturday, its eighth-largest margin of victory in school history, Southeastern (1-1) will face its second Conference USA opponent of the season after opening against Tulane on Sept. 3. The meeting with USM (1-1) will be the 22nd between the schools on the gridiron with the Golden Eagles holding an 18-3 lead.

“Southern Miss is very tough, they're very athletic and have great team speed,” Southeastern head coach Mike Lucas said during his weekly press conference on Tuesday. “They have huge linemen and are well coached in all aspects. We have to have a good week of practice and play as well as we can.”

Against Savannah State, the Lions gained 547 yards total offense and scored touchdowns on six consecutive possessions in securing their largest margin of victory against a current Division I school. Brian Young completed 15 of 25 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown while Nathan Stanley was 11-for-15 for 116 yards and a pair of TDs.

The Lions gained 270 yards on the ground with redshirt freshman Jordan Wells leading the team with 62 yards and a touchdown. Zeke Jones rushed for three TDs while Michael Chaney scored on a 13-yard run as Southeastern built a 42-6 lead at halftime and cruised from there.

“We talked about how it had been a long time since we had smiles after a game,” Lucas said. “It was a long time since we had a win, we needed one badly. Our kids need that, our coaches needed that, our coaches' families needed that. Everybody needed a win and it was good for the University and to have a nice crowd.”

On the season, Young is 35-for-60 through the air for 410 yards and a touchdown with Stanley 16-for-24 for 162 yards and two scores. Brandon Collins leads Southeastern with 15 receptions with Simmie Yarborough (9 receptions), freshman Carl Pearson (7 receptions), and Kory Theodore (6 receptions) next.

Freshman Marice Sutton has recorded a team-high 11 tackles in the first two games for Southeastern with Ricky Irvin, Robert Alford and Avery Crooks with 10 each.

USM opened the season with a 19-17 win over Louisiana Tech before falling, 26-20, in its Conference USA opener last week at Marshall. The loss was USM's third in a conference opener in the past 16 years and the Golden Eagles' first loss at Marshall in four games.

Senior quarterback Austin Davis recorded the sixth 300-yard passing game of his career and moved past Brett Favre (7,695 yards) as USM's all-time passing leader with 7,931. Senior kicker Danny Hrapmann, who lettered as a freshman at Southeastern in 2007, moved into fourth place for field goals made (34) and is on the 2011 Lou Groza Award preseason watch list.
