HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team officially opened fall practice Thursday morning with a two-hour workout in Strawberry Stadium.
The Lions, who held their conditioning test Wednesday evening, hit the Strawberry Stadium turf at 6 a.m. and worked out in helmets in a 25-period session that featured work on the fundamentals.
“There were some good things and some bad things out there today,” Southeastern head coach Mike Lucas said. “There were some guys I wished would have come back in better shape and I was disappointed in some of those that we're going to be depending on.”
The majority of the team returned in shape with Lucas praising the offensive line for their summer work.
“We had a whole bunch of guys that came back in great shape,” Lucas said. “The offensive line came back in awesome shape with great leadership by (senior center)
Josh Penton through the summer program.”
Southeastern, which opens the season Sept. 3 against Tulane in the Louisiana Superdome, will start its third different quarterback in the past three seasons after Brian Babin and Tyler Beatty concluded their careers after the 2009 and 2010 seasons, respectively.
Hahnville's
Brian Young, who started a pair of games in Beatty's absence last season, is the most experienced quarterback returning with the redshirt freshman duo of
Jordan Barnett and
Jeremy Meyers; true freshman
Brian Ensminger and Ole Miss transfer
Nathan Stanley all competing for playing time.
“We have a lot of quarterbacks who can throw the ball very well,” Lucas said. “We have five guys in camp and they were zipping it around today.”
Southeastern will return to practice at 6 a.m. on Friday with a two-hour workout in helmets before working out in shells beginning Saturday.
