HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team worked out twice on Thursday, holding an early two-hour practice in full gear in Strawberry Stadium before working in shells in the evening on the adjacent practice fields.
Southeastern overcame a sluggish performance in the morning session as it continued worked on all phases of its game in the evening session. The Lions spent part of the evening working on their blitz packages and pickups before concluding with two drives each by the No. 1 and No. 2 offense in the two-minute drill.
The Southeastern defense stood up in all four drives, highlighted by an interception by freshman
Paul Kopesky.
“It was nice to get back on the grass,” Southeastern head coach Mike Lucas said. “The kids had a good tempo and there was great enthusiasm in the evening workout.”
With a strong receiving corp since its re-instatement in 2003, Southeastern enters the 2011 season with its most depth at the tight end position, paced by Tulane transfer
Antoine Duplessis, junior college transfer
C.J. Ogbuehi (pronounced ah-BOO-hee) and true freshman
Jordan Moon.
“We have some real talent at tight end,” Lucas said. “In the past we had (four-year letterwinner) Cole Wardell out there by himself.
C.J. Ogbuehi can really run,
Antoine Duplessis is such a physical specimen and
Jordan Moon as a freshman is very advanced, so we have three guys that we can depend on and do some package stuff with.”
Southeastern, which opens its season Sept. 3 against Tulane in the Louisiana Superdome, returns to practice on Friday with a 6 a.m. workout before wrapping up two-a-days on Saturday. The Lions will wrap up camp with single workouts on Monday and Tuesday before starting classes on Wednesday.
