Louisiana 5A Player Of The Year Joins SLU Hoops

Earned MVP honors at coaches association All-Star game

HAMMOND, La. – Marlain Veal, the Louisiana Sports Writers Association's 5A Player of the Year, has joined the Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball program, head coach Jay Ladner announced Tuesday.

"We are extremely excited to add the Times Picayune Large School Player of the Year, Louisiana 5A player of the year and All-Star game MVP Marlain Veal to the Lion Basketball family," Ladner said.

Veal led Helen Cox High School (26-9) to the quarterfinals as a senior, averaging 15.3 points, four assists, four rebounds and a pair of steals per game. For his efforts, he was named the District 8-5A MVP and to the LSWA's 5A All-State squad in addition to the NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune Large Schools Player of the Year, player of the year on The New Orleans Advocate's All-Metro team and 5A Player of the Year by the LSWA.

The 5-foot-9 guard scored 18 points, earning MVP honors in the Louisiana High School Coaches Association All-Star Game after helping lead the East to a 119-100 win at Hirsch Coliseum in Shreveport, Louisiana, back in late March.

"Marlain is an exciting, talented and tough player that we expect will contribute immediately," Ladner said. "We also love that we're able to get into talent-rich New Orleans to help rebuild the program."
