Southeastern Football 2023 Spring Practice Report No. 2

Scelfo pleased with way SLU closes week two of spring drills

HAMMOND, La. – The reigning Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana University football team closed out week two of spring practice Saturday morning at Strawberry Stadium.

Saturday's practice was the sixth of 15 during spring drills for the Lions. Two-time SLC Coach of the Year Frank Scelfo was pleased with how his Lions finished out the second week of spring work.

"We were a little sluggish early in the week, but we really picked up our pace today," Scelfo said. "We had a good day today and were physical on both sides of the ball. We ran the ball at times and at other times our defense answered the challenge and stopped the run. So, we did good things on both sides of the ball."

For the first time this spring, SLU had an officiating crew on the practice field.

"Having the officials here helps us so much," Scelfo commented. "They're able to communicate with our guys about what they're looking for. It's a great learning opportunity for us."

As the spring progresses, Scelfo wants to continue to progress.

"Spring ball gives us 15 practices where guys have the opportunity to put in the work to improve," Scelfo stated. "We're still looking to identify our leaders, but that's a process that will continue to evolve all the way through fall camp."

Scelfo identified areas on both sides of the ball that he's been pleased with six practices in.

"Our quarterbacks have become more comfortable with our offensive scheme," Scelfo said. "Defensively, we've really been pleased with how our front seven has performed."

Southeastern will return to the practice field Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Lions are scheduled to open the 2023 regular season Sept. 2 at Mississippi State.
