Troy capitalizes on turnovers to hold off Lady Lions

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana had its highest-scoring game in three seasons but could not overcome a University Center record 40 turnovers in falling to Troy University 100-90 on Monday night.

It was the most points scored by Southeastern (1-9) since a 91-69 win over William Carey on Nov. 20, 2012. But Troy (5-4), which came in averaging 83.8 points per game, was able to score 38 points off the Lady Lion turnovers, most created by the Trojans' backcourt press. The 40 turnovers broke the arena record of 38 set against Central Florida in the 1994-95 season.

"Any time you have that many turnovers in a game, you cannot expect anything good to happen," Southeastern head coach Yolanda Moore said. "Troy is a very good team. They lead the nation in scoring and we can see why. Their defense creates their offense and we told our team that. We just couldn't handle that pressure in the second half. That's something we're going to have to work on."

KaeLynn Boyd led Southeastern for the second straight game with 26 points. Taylin Underwood added 20 points and four steals while Nanna Pool recorded her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Dani Fielder had a career-high 10 rebounds as the Lady Lions finished with a season-best 47. Southeastern also shot a season-best 50 percent (30-of-60) from the field. Jaclyn Scholvin finished with career-highs of nine points and four steals while Peaches Anderson had six assists.

Troy had five players in double figures, led by Ashley Beverly Kelley with 24 points. Beverly Kelley also had eight assists and seven steals. Rachel Reid and Caitlyn Ramirez had 19 points each while Chelsea Banks tossed in 15 and Arjae' Saunders 11. Ramirez also had nine of the Trojans' 35 rebounds while Saunders had four of the team's 21 steals.

Troy took its biggest lead at 73-58 on a Beverly Kelly jumper with 1:32 left in the third. But a layup by Scholvin started an 8-3 run for the Lady Lions. Boyd hit a 3 from the left wing with 3 seconds left to cut the deficit to 76-67 going into the fourth quarter.

A layup by Pool brought Southeastern to within 76-71 with 9:11 left in the game. Reid answered with a 3 and Beverly Kelley followed with a jumper to push the margin back to 81-71 at the 8:31 mark. A Boyd jumper got the lead down to 85-81 with 4:53 left. But the Lady Lions would go nearly three minutes without a field goal as Troy went ahead 94-85 on a Beverly Kelley jumper with 2:20 left.

Underwood hit a free throw to make it 94-88 with 1:19 left. But a pair of turnovers in the final minute allowed Troy to finish on a 6-2 run.

Troy took a 47-40 halftime lead and extended it to 55-41 on a Beverly Kelley layup with 8:56 left in the third. Southeastern twice got the margin down to seven but a pair of Ramirez free throws started a 15-9 run for the Trojans.

There were five lead changes and two ties in the first quarter as both teams pressed the action. Southeastern took its biggest lead at 13-10 on 3 by Anderson with 5:56 left. Troy a 17-15 on a Banks' 3 with 3:46 left. La'Tia Fils-Aime' hit a 3 at the buzzer to give the Trojans a 25-20 lead.

Southeastern tied the game at 25 on an Anderson free throw with 7:50 left in the half. But Troy responded with a 9-2 run to go up 34-27 on a Ramirez layup with 5:46 left. A three-point play by Ramirez gave the Trojans their biggest lead of the half at 44-33 with 1:11 left before Boyd hit a 3 to make it 44-38 with 49 seconds remaining.

Southeastern will close out its non-conference schedule at Mississippi State Monday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m.
