Known as the "Gentleman Halfback", Wilbur Derrick joined the Lions in 1960 after a stint in the Army and made an immediate impact. Derrick led the Gulf States Conference in rushing in both 1960 and 1961, earning all-GSC honors in 1960. Over his two-year stint, Derrick carried the ball 225 times for 1046 yards and the Lions won back-to-back GSC titles. An impressive performer in the classroom as well, Derrick was named to the Academic All-American squad in 1961.
