The first full time Sports Information Director for Southeastern, Larry Hymel served in that capacity for 28 years. He was honored by the College Sports Information Directors with a Lifetime Membership upon retirement and cited by the organization for 25-year service to the association. He won two CoSIDA district awards in 1990 for Excellent in Writing and in 1988 for the men’s basketball brochure, co-edited by assistants Barry Niemeyer and Mickey Triche, as the best in the district. He received All-American awards from the National Association of Intercollegiate athletics five times for his football game programs, including in 1974 when it was ranked second best in the nation. The Louisiana Sports Writers Association bestowed the coveted Mac Russo Award to him in 1994. After retired as SID, Hymel was director of Southeastern’s University Center for 11 years. Upon his retirement, he began work as the Alumni Athletic Coordinator for the Southeastern Alumni Association. In 2011, he was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Writers Associattion Hall of Fame upon receiving the organization's Distinguished Service Award for Journalism - the highest accolade bestowed by the LSWA. In 2025, Hymel earned induction in the College Sports Communicators Hall of Fame.
