HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team returned to Strawberry Stadium to complete the first week of fall practice as the upcoming 2025 season approaches.
The Lady Lions are coming off a 6-9-2 season that finished 5-4-1 in Southland Conference play last season. Fourth-year head coach Nathan Gillespie is enthusiastic about the 2025 season and the strides his team has showcased in the first week of practice.
"The grit shown by the team in these early days has been exciting to see," said Coach Gillespie. "They've pushed each other to be better every practice as the season draws near."
Southeastern will return 23 players from last season's roster, including team captains Mia Martin and reigning SLC Newcomer of the Year Kendall Curran. Though with 11 seniors lost from the 2024 season, the Lady Lions will heavily rely on their returners to pick up the mantle and make an impact on the field.
"Our team culture will carry over and everyone is here to work and compete," stated Martin. "As a veteran, we have reiterated our high standards and as a whole, the team has responded well this week."
SLU introduced eight newcomers for the vastly approaching 2025 season to rebuild its strength in numbers at every position. The Lady Lions added three junior transfers and five true freshmen to this season's roster. Eager to embrace the challenges that come with every new year, Gillespie is excited to see the impact this talented group of newcomers bring to the field.
"This is our first true recruiting class, and we've lost a lot of experience, but this signing class is special," commented Gillespie. "They offer a different flare to the game alongside their athleticism, and we're excited for their skills to be displayed this season."
Southeastern will open the 2025 season on the road against Louisiana-Monroe Thursday, Aug. 14 at 5 p.m.
