HAMMOND – Playing in its first home match in more than a month, the Southeastern Louisiana women's tennis team earned a convincing 7-0 non-conference victory over Butler Tuesday afternoon at the North Cypress Fitness Club.
The Lady Lions swept singles and doubles play to improve to 4-7 overall on the season. Butler fell to 5-7 in dual match play.
Southeastern opened the day with new doubles pairings at the top of the doubles draw. At No. 1, sophomore
Audrey Chelini and freshman
Camille Pilon defeated Butler's Natali Jaimes and Becky Jenkins, 8-3. Also teaming for the first time were Lady Lion sophomore
Morgane Dadot and freshman
Nina Schmied, who earned an 8-5 victory over Gabriella Bobrowski and Brittany Farmer at No. 2. At No. 3, sophomores
Mia Hagiu and
Annika Hanke improved to 4-7, completing the sweep with an 8-6 victory over BU's Cam Thompson and Ashley Breitenbach.
The Lady Lions took a 2-0 lead when Chelini improved to 6-5 with a 6-1, 6-4 straight set singles victory over Bobrowski at No. 1. The Bourdeaux, France native is confident the Lady Lions have their best tennis ahead of them.
“Our goal is to reach the conference tournament,” Chelini commented. “We have a young team, but we are playing better and have a lot of confidence in each other.”
Southeastern pushed the lead to 3-0 with a win by Schmied (3-8) at No. 4 over Brittany Farmer. The Lady Lions clinched the match at No. 3, as Dadot won her fifth straight singles match and ran her team-best mark to 9-1 with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Jenkins.
The Lady Lions advanced the lead to 5-0 with a win by Pilon (6-4) at No. 2, as the Orleans, France native battled from a set down to defeat Jaimes, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Hanke improved to 4-5 overall with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Kate Panawash at No. 6.
At No. 6, Southeastern freshman
Isabel Brito completed the sweep. The Badajoz, Spain native rallied past Thompson, 0-6, 6-2, 10-7.
The Lady Lions will be back in action on Saturday, hosting Nicholls for a 12 p.m. Southland Conference match at the Oak Knoll Country Club.
